Show us your healthy smiles to celebrate World Oral Health Day

Children of all ages in the Macedon Ranges are invited to join in the fun of World Oral Health Day 2019 by entering a ‘Healthy Smiles Photo Competition’.

Organised by Cobaw Community Health, parents are invited to take a photograph of their child that demonstrates at least one of the three key Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) messages: Eat well, Drink well, Clean well. The best photos will be shared on Cobaw’s social media pages leading up to World Oral Health Day – Wednesday 20 March 2019.

DHSV data indicates that several postcodes in the Macedon Ranges have a greater percentage of children than the Victorian statewide average presenting at public dental services with four or more decayed, missing or filled teeth, in both the 0-5 and 6-12 years age brackets.

Health Promotion Coordinator at Cobaw, Lauren Tyrell, said, “We want to make sure that young people in our region start out with healthy teeth and mouths. Oral health is so important for general health and wellbeing and poor oral health can have a huge impact on your self-esteem, social life, employment prospects, and has been linked in the long-term to serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes and cancer”.

Tooth decay is largely preventable and DHSV’s key messages of making good choices about what we eat and drink and ensuring that we maintain good oral hygiene will help young people to maintain healthy teeth throughout their lives.

The theme of this year’s World Oral Health Day campaign is ‘Say Ahh. Act on mouth health’ encouraging individual action to take care of your oral health.
